Professor Wegstapel trained in the UK as a general surgeon and gained specialist experience in gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery.
He is Lead Clinician for colorectal cancer surgery at the Medway NHS Foundation Trust and is one of the leading laparoscopic colorectal surgeons in the country. He also trains fellow surgeons in these advanced techniques.
Professor Wegstapel has an interest in fast-track recovery programmes for patients following abdominal surgery.
He has developed a day case laparoscopic cholecystectomy, incisional and inguinal hernia service at Medway Maritime Hospital.
He has an interest in colorectal surgery which includes treatment of common conditions such as haemorrhoids, fistulae in ano, anal fissures, pilonidal sinuses, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
Professor Wegstapel is a fully trained endoscopist which includes diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy.
Professor Wegstapel is currently a member of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons and the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.
